Cortisol and Weight
Cortisol weight, as we are calling it for now is weight that you gain when you are under pressure and crave only carbohydrates. There is a theory that eating too many carbohydrates causes insulin resistance. Stress is said to be behind the carbohydrate theory.
Consider the types of food people crave when stressed--carbohydrate-rich and often sugary comfort foods. Carbohydrates also stimulate production of serotonin, the brain's mood-calming neurotransmitter. Stress drives the carbohydrate cravings.
This combined with the hyperinsulinemic (hyperinsulinemic is the presence of excess insulin in the body resulting in hypoglycemia) state that many Americans are in, thereby creating the recipe for Cortisol Weight gain. Chronic stress is a big piece to the obesity puzzle that has 50 percent of Americans overweight and another 29 percent obese.
Cortisol Weight and You
The stress response affects insulin regulation and alters glucose metabolism and fat storage. Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes. Unfortunately, to concentrate on these factors and ignore the function of other organs as well as the hypothalamus and pituitary, thyroid, adrenal and sex glands, is the equivalent of putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. The problem is not simply that people are eating too many carbohydrates; there is reasoning behind the behavior.
Taking a hormone reducing supplement may be the answer for many Americans. With lives that are too busy to stop and exercise or to just stop and breath in order to calm down, it may be the only answer to cortisol problems. That is why many people are now looking alternative ways to combat this problem without putting more pressure on their bodies with chemicals.
