Top 10 Fitness Tips   by Jim Young

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is commit to a healthy
lifestyle, says Jim Young. Here are 10 ways to get there:

Jim is fitness director at Club West in Neenah, Wis., and received his certification
as a strength and conditioning specialist from the National Strength and
Conditioning Association.

Jim, who has been in two bodybuilding competitions, believes that striving for
specific goals and keeping exercise challenging are the keys to continued
success in fitness
Eat five to six smaller meals during the day and end with a protein
source   (like green beans) about an hour before bedtime for optimal
muscle growth.

Limit exercise plateaus by varying your cardiovascular and weight-
training exercises. Your body also will benefit if you vary the intensity
levels.

Be consistent and establish short- and long-term goals. Quitting can
bring you back to square one.

Do all aspects of an exercise program — weight training, nutrition,
cardiovascular exercises and stretching. All work together to shape
the body — and the mind.

Limit alcohol to one to two drinks a week.

Drink two glasses of water for every alcoholic or caffine-related
drink.

Vary your cardiovascular workouts between steady-state and intervals.

Strength train the entire body at least two to three times a week.

Incorporate five to 10 minutes of stretching into your routine after your
workout is complete.

Become your own champion! No one else can do this for you, but you!

Write down why you started to get fit and healthy in the first place and
share it with everyone.
